There’s no question that one of the most beloved Game of Thrones characters is Arya Stark. Played brilliantly by Maisie Williams, the young Stark sibling pushed her way through adversity to become one of the greatest warriors in Westeros. Well, Williams' time in the GOT cast came to a close in 2019, and now she’s moved on to new iconic roles, including her latest part in Apple TV+’s The New Look. So, as this historical drama premieres on the 2024 TV schedule, the actress's co-star Ben Mendelsohn took a moment to geek out about Williams' iconic fantasy role while explaining how much he loved working with her.

Apple TV+’s The New Look follows the rise of Christian Dior right after World War II, and in it, Mendelsohn plays the legendary designer while Maisie Williams plays his sister Catherine Dior. The Bloodline star told me during an interview that he adored working with the Game of Thrones alum, and that partially stemmed from his love for the HBO megahit.

Wearing jewellery is second nature to most of us, it’s something we barely think about. Along with our clothes, hair, make-up, jewellery is an expression of our style, a statement of how we see ourselves in the world.
But unlike – say – a haircut or a new pair of jeans, jewellery reaches to something deeper. Crafted from precious metals and rare stones, our most treasured jewellery is often a token of love, given to mark a significant rite of passage in our lives: an important birthday, a wedding, a promise, an heirloom that links us to someone passed.

We invest the jewellery we love with special powers; these precious metals and stones become such a part of us that we feel lost without them – they seem to become connected to our personal strength and power.

Some might call it superstition, but for Hebden Bridge-based jeweller Toby Cotterill, it’s magic: “I think human beings are capable of magic.” he says, “We can all go beyond what we do in our everyday and get to a different place, and it can help us through hard times. I’m not saying that my jewellery is magic, it’s not me doing it, it’s people putting their emotions and memories and histories into a piece and giving it power.”

Throughout the world and since the beginning of time people have imbued jewellery with talismanic power. The objects we make from precious minerals and stones have been buried with us and long-outlasted skin and bone. Those ancient objects continue to exert an influence and connect us to the stories of people who lived before us.

In his tiny-but-perfectly-formed workshop in Hebden Bridge’s Northlight Studios, Toby sees himself as part of an ancient tradition, using tools and methods that jewellers and metalsmiths have refined and developed over thousands of years.

It’s a magical process to watch. Toby takes gold or silver, melts it, moulds it, cuts and hammers it, drills and files, heats it and plunges it into water, rolls it in sand – completely absorbed, at ease with his tools and lost in the making.

And somehow the metal takes on a new life, becomes something else – a shimmering beetle or fossil-like thing emerges. Something both ancient and alive at the same time, a moving, sparkling, precious thing with weight, something you want to touch…

One of four brothers, Toby’s childhood was spent in the hills and woods of the Welsh countryside: “Dad was a furniture maker, mum was a nurse.” he explains, “We didn’t have much money, but we were very happy. There was a move at the time toward self-sufficiency, so we had a small-holding, a few fields with maybe 20 sheep and a few pigs and cows. Mum and dad between them would work really hard, working the land and bringing us up. I think they wanted us to have that kind of childhood – grubby in the fields, learning the names of animals and plants and trees and just playing outside, making things.”

One in four female small business owners has taken a pay cut in the past year, according to new research.

The survey of 1,000 female small business owners examined how their experience has shifted in the past year and found that the down economy has forced a quarter of these business owners to cut their own pay to keep their businesses afloat.

For those small businesses that have been open for at least a year, many have also raised the price of their product or service (37%), and more than a quarter are actively seeking less expensive resources (27%).

Conducted by Talker Research for Office Depot, the survey found that 53% of female business owners said the past year has been the hardest for their business.

In 2023, respondents expressed challenges with funding (42%) and growing their business (30%), which continue to be the top struggles this year (39% and 30% respectively).

Experiencing fatigue was more of a pain point last year (23%), while marketing is proving to be a greater challenge this year (25%).

However, hard work has paid off for many female small business owners this year, allowing them to reach their 2023 goals: growing profit (goal of 59%, achieved by 26%), gaining more customers (goal of 53%, achieved by 41%) and expanding their business (goal of 28%, achieved by 12%).

And to keep the momentum going, respondents predict they’ll continue to uplevel and succeed through continued revenue growth (63%), gaining more customers (54%) and business expansion (27%).

But success is also about a lot more than dollars and cents. Twenty-one percent of respondents said success is all about making a positive impact in their community and a fifth (21%) included innovation as a success marker.

And while the next year looks to be more positive for female small business owners, there will still be challenges to overcome, with inflation (39%) and funding (25%) serving as the top concerns.

To overcome these challenges, female SBOs are throwing themselves into their work more often — but how much is too much?

Work-life balance improvements have slowed by 15% since last year, as only this year, 58% said their work-life balance has improved since becoming a business owner, compared to 73% who said the same last year.

Women surveyed feel they need to choose between their family and their profession multiple times every month, while one in eight feel this way every week.

And overall, 42% said being a business owner has made it more difficult to balance their outside work responsibilities.

To better balance their work and family life, those surveyed are committed to “cutting back on working hours,” “taking time for quiet reflection” and “being willing to take a day off as necessary.”

For respondents who set up their business in the last year, top reasons include wanting to be one’s own boss (59%), deciding to pursue a passion or hobby (46%) and drive to put an idea into action (41%).
