Most drummers, bassist (guitarists tend to me clueless) ;) think of odd meter like 12/8 and stuff as happening within the same measure, i.e.- play 12 beats the same sorta 'static measure' as you play underneath.. This is generally called POLYRHYTHM. I dig that a lot and it fun and some are pretty difficult while a lot of others are pretty easy.I this video, I'm speaking of CROSS-RHYTHMS which are different, and fun to determine mathematically as, they don't all repeat on the '1' of a few pars
